Adverse effects

Adverse effects have been presented in several different ways. It is probably not useful to generalize from individual studies considering the methodologic differences of data collection, estimation of severity, dosaging, inclusion and exclusion criteria and policies of patient withdrawal. A crude method adopted by Hempenstall and co-workers was to calculate number needed to harm (NNH) based on withdrawals from studies due to side effects [56]. An abbreviated list is presented in Table 18.1.

Detailed information is readily available for the pharmacokinetics and side effect profiles of individual drugs, their indications and contraindications in different patient populations and different age groups. The reader is strongly advised to use such material to become fluent with the pharmacologic properties of the drugs they choose to prescribe.
