Knowledge of the precise epidemiology and especially natural history of CPDN is of vital importance and will help to design and implement effective management strategies. With regard to pharmacologic agents currently available and licensed for treatment of CPDN, it is important to emphasize the need for a consensus on standard outcome measures to be evaluated in drug trials that would enable easier comparison of treatment efficacy.
There is also an urgent need for further well-designed trials of drug combinations and alternative therapies. These will provide the clinical evidence necessary to design effective and widely accepted treatment algorithms that will only improve pain relief.
Further research is also needed to understand and identify the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms contributing to the symptoms in an individual, The ultimate goal is to be able to safely bridge clinical findings with basic mechanisms and subsequently to apply mechanism-tailored treatment strategies that will increase the chances of successful pain relief.
