Currently there are no objective investigations that can be used to validate the clinical findings.

Radiologic investigations are important to differentiate between symptomatic and idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. MRI is used to identify neurovascular compressions and needs to be of high quality in order to identify them. There are only a few studies that are of high enough quality to provide evidence for its use.

Sensory testing is not done routinely but there is evidence to suggest that qualitative sensory testing (QST) and evoked potentials may play an important role in differentiating between symptomatic and idi-opathic trigeminal neuralgia [53, 54].
