Summary

There is increasing evidence that oxidative stess plays a major role in the development of late diabetic complications. Oxidative stress generated by hyperglycemia, AGEs, or other factors of cellular activation results in activation of NF-kB activation correlates in diabetic patients with glucose control and can be reduced by treatment with a-lipoic acid. The vasculoprotective action of a-lipoic acid supports the hypothesis shown in Figure 3.
