Introduction

Biomarkers have been used for many years to predict and track biological changes in tissue and organ systems. The conceptual framework for their use was captured in the output of the Biomarkers Definitions Working Group [1], which provided a valuable working definition and some challenges to the scientific community. Here, a biomarker was defined as "a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes or pharmacological responses to a therapeutic intervention" [ 1] . The working group noted that biomarkers may have the greatest value in early efficacy studies and safety evaluations with applications that could include prediction and monitoring of clinical response to an intervention [1] .
