indications that some populations may have received contributions from other clusters. In Europe, Lapps, Sardinians, Basques, and Icelanders are four major outliers in order of divergence on the basis of genetic and historical information, and Lapps join more closely with Asian Arctic populations than Europeans.3 In this connection it is interesting that the frequency of nontasters among Lapps, a Scandinavian population, is much closer to that of Japanese and Chinese than to Europeans (Table 8.1).
