Diffusion plays an important role in one of the most efficient aerosol delivery devices, the cigarette, because of the submicron size of the particles produced by combustion (21). It is conceivable that the next generation of inhalers may take greater advantage of this mechanism of delivery. However, the major limitation to this approach is that an aerosol with a significant submicron fraction tends to be exhaled without depositing. The closer the particle size approaches the mean free path of the conducting gas, the more likely it is that deposition will not occur within usual lung residence times.
