Application Of Biotechnologies In Drug Discovery And Development

In this section we will focus primarily on recombinant proteins. We will discuss strategies specific to monoclonal antibody production in the introduction to antibodies and derivatives (Chapter 10). Issues specific to peptides will be discussed in the context of optimization of molecular characteristics (Section 4.1.3). This section will conclude with a discussion of the use of recombinant DNA technology to produce proteins and genes to accelerate discovery of new molecular entities—small molecules or macromolecules—that have desirable pharmaceutical properties such as physical and chemical stability and bioavailability.
