Recommendations 571 Oecdeu Guidelines

The partition coefficient P in 1-octanol/water has to be measured in all EU member countries before a chemical is marketed for the first time and is one of the chemical properties laid down by the OECD as part of the MPD (Minimum Pre-marketing set of Data) [64], To eliminate disadvantages of the shake-flask method to estimated log P values, chromatographic methods can be used. The method is based on the putative correlation between log P and log kw values and uses reference compounds. However, it is known now, as discussed in the present chapter, that this is not always true. For new classes of compounds there are no comparable reference structures. Therefore, this method has its limits.
