At present a fundamental knowledge and theory describing the compaction of particulate solids, specifically pharmaceuticals, is lacking. While it is generally recognized that the mechanical properties of such materials are critical in directing compaction behaviour, there is no predictive capability. Roberts and Rowe (1987a) presented a pragmatic approach to predicting the consolidation mechanism of pharmaceutical materials based on a knowledge of Young's modulus of elasticity, yield stress, hardness and strain rate sensitivity (Fig. 22). Indeed, a combination of a predictive approach based on mechanical property measurements combined with heuristics should enable the development of quality expert systems for tablet formulation.
