It seems that administration of magnesium can have a marked effect on muscle spasm and muscle-based pain. Unfortunately it is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and so for a useful therapeutic effect it needs to be given parenterally. When given by infusion over a number of hours the duration of pain relief can persist for several months. Side effects include postural hypotension and a warm feeling but these both diminish rapidly shortly after the termination of infusion. In our practice we co-administer it with lidocaine to maximize pain relief and reduction in muscle spasm.
