We had initially noticed that [3H]mesulergine, a ligand with high affinity for 5-HT2 and dopamine D2 receptors (Closse 1983; Enz et al. 1984; Markstein 1983), did strongly label the choroid plexus. By using binding techniques to both tissue membranes and sections, we had also shown the presence of a [3H]5-HT binding site in the choroid plexus which was neither 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B, nor 5-HT2A. Indeed, the choroid plexus was not labeled by [3H]8-OH-DPAT (5-HT1A) or [125I]ICYP (5-HT1B), nor was it labeled by [3H]ketanserin, [3H]spiperone, or classical 5-HT2 or 5-HT2/D2 ligands. In contrast, [3H]LSD and [125I]LSD did strongly label the choroid plexus. We named this site 5-HT1C, since it was also labeled by [3H]5-HT: by definition [3H]5-HT binding was defining 5-HT1 sites (later however, it was renamed 5-HT2C, for operational, transductional, and structural reasons as mentioned in section 1.8).
