The basal ganglia comprise a group of subcortical regions involved in motor and cognitive behavior. The effects of 5-HT in the basal ganglia are mediated by a variety of 5-HT receptors (Di Matteo et al. 2008). Among them, the 5-HT2C receptors are likely to have an important role in view of their widespread distribution and the specific neuronal types they control. This chapter summarizes the different facets of 5-HT2C-mediated transmission in the basal ganglia. Particular attention will be given to its functional implications in normal and pathological states associated with basal ganglia dysfunction such as Parkinson's disease and antipsychotic-induced tardive dyskinesia.
