Of Diseases Related to Chronic DA Neuron Impairment

The link between 5-HT2C receptors and the control of orofacial movement is of particular importance in the context of the chronic use of antipsychotics and the impairment of DA function in Parkinson's disease (Kostrzewa et al. 2007). This link is further established in humans by data showing that the propensity of developing dyskinesia after neuroleptic use is correlated to polymorphisms of the 5-HT2C receptor (Gunes et al. 2007, 2008). In the last part of this chapter, we will review the consequences of chronic alterations in DA transmission on the role of 5-HT2C receptors in the basal ganglia.
