These agents may be useful to help with insomnia, making it easier to "deal" with pain or to treat anxiety which can play a role in pain states especially acute pain. However, it must always be remembered that these agents do not have any analgesic properties. Therefore they must be used with caution in acute pain, especially when high doses of opioids are required, as significant sedation and respiratory depression can occur in the benzodiazepine-na'ive patient. In an anxious patient with pain, adequate titration with analgesics should occur before the addition of a benzodiazepine.
