With advancing age there is a general decline in hepatocyte mass, with a proportional reduction in hepatic blood flow. Blood flow to the liver, and its corresponding mass, decreases by approximately 40% with increasing age (McLean and Couteur 2004). Although oxidative drug metabolic processes may become less efficient with aging, studies demonstrate that phase I and phase II enzymatic reactions appear to be well preserved with increasing age (McLean and Couteur 2004). Serum albumin concentration decreases by approximately 10% in older patients (McLean and Couteur 2004).
