Metatarsal and Digital Nerve Blocks for the Foot

The plantar digital nerves are derived from the posterior tibial nerve and provide sensation to most of the plantar surface.

Metatarsal Nerve Block

In a sterile fashion a 25 g 1.5 in. needle is inserted proximal to the metatarsal head adjacent to the bone of the toe to be blocked. The needle is advanced from the dorsal surface to the plantar surface since the plantar digital nerve is on the dorsal side of the flexor retinaculum. A total of 3 cc of local is injected after negative aspiration.

Digital Nerve Block

In a sterile fashion a 25 g 1.5 in. needle is inserted at the base of the toe adjacent to the bony portion of the digit that has to be blocked. Following negative aspiration a total of 3 cc of local per digit is injected.
