Regional Analgesia

Regional analgesia is administered by anesthesiologists. This includes epidural, spinal, and combined spinal epidural analgesia. Also administered by the anesthesiologists is the lumbar sympathetic block, which, although effective, is rarely used in obstetrics. The aim of these interventions is to provide excellent regional analgesia with little or no motor block. This is achieved with the use of neuraxial opioids (spinal or epidural) combined with very low concentrations of local anesthetics. As with any anesthetic, the anesthesiologist, when consulted, will take a history, perform a focused physical examination, and obtain consent for the procedure.
