Flurazepam Hydrochloride, USP. Flurazepam hydrochloride, 7-chloro-1-[2-(diethylamino)ethyl]-5-(2-fluorophenyl)-1, 3-dihydro-2H-1, 4-benzodiazepine-2-one dihydrochloride (Dalmane), is notable as a benzodi-azepine marketed almost exclusively for use in insomnia. Metabolism of the dialkylaminoalkyl side chain is extensive. A major metabolite is ^-dealkyl flurazepam, which has a very long half-life and persists for several days after administration. Consequently, it produces cumulative clinical effects and side effects (e.g., excessive sedation) and residual pharmacologic activity, even after discontinuation.
