A vaccine may be defined as a solution or suspension of killed or live/attenuated virus, killed rickettsia, killed or live/attenuated bacteria, or antigens derived from these sources, which are used to confer active, artificially acquired immunity against that organism or related organisms. When administered, the vaccine represents the initial exposure, resulting in the acquisition of immunity.
