Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is found in temperate regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. The dried rhizome of valerian contains an unpleasant-smelling volatile oil that is attributed to isovaleric acid. Despite the odor, valerian is a safe and effective sleep aid.
