Neurotensin (NT) is a tridecapeptide that functions both as a hormone and a neurotransmitter. It regulates intestinal motility, feeding behavior, ► nociception, thermoregulation, and anterior pituitary hormone secretion. In the central nervous system (CNS), NT modulates classical mo-noamine neurotransmitter systems, most notably dopa-mine (DA). Because of its modulation of DA circuits, NT has been implicated in the pathophysiology of ► schizophrenia and ► drug abuse, and may represent a potential therapeutic target for treatment of these disorders.
