Bipolar Depression

Thirty years ago, it was suggested that the MAOI antidepressants might be more effective than the tricyclics in treating bipolar depression (Himmelhoch et al. 1972). Later, Himmelhoch et al. (1991) demonstrated in a double-blind study that tranylcypromine was more effective than imipramine for bipolar depression. In addition, tricyclics are more likely than other agents to induce mania (Weir and Goodwin 1987). As a result, the tricyclics are not recommended for monotherapy of bipolar depression.
