Electroencephalographic Recordings

In recording EEGs, the desired signal is very small in amplitude; thus, a large electrode that sums activity over large regions of the brain surface is used. Although this technique is less invasive than others, the information it yields is comparatively narrow, in that a large array of neurons must be simultaneously activated for the potentials to be recorded at the scalp. As a result, stimulus presentation and EEG averaging are typically required to separate the signal desired from the background noise.
