In order to obtain an accurate impression in these cases, special techniques have to be used to extract the most significant information from the distance matrix and to display this selected information in an easily visualised form. The loss of information incurred can be minimized by using a number of complementing visualisation techniques rather than a single technique. Visualisation techniques often used are: nearest neighbour tables, dendrograms, re-ordered matrices and non-linear maps (see Figure 29). Of these we most often use the non-linear maps and nearest neighbour tables, and occasionally the re-ordered matrices.
