Opioids an Integrative Part in Perioperative Medicine

No other area in medicine has been affected by the use of opioids more than their application in anesthesia. Their use for the induction and maintenance of anesthesia has led to an increase in safety, especially since other anesthetic agents are characterized by a pronounced cardiovascular depressive effect. Such depression is seen with the use of barbiturates (i.e. methohexital, thiopental), high doses of hypnotics (i.e. etomidate, propofol), as well as all volatile agents (halothane, enflurane, isoflurane, desflurane, sevoflurane).
